Members of the public may be contacted by people who claim to be from Standard Life, even using legitimate employee names, or they may even also have official-sounding names and job titles.

Some examples of names that have been given have actually been previous genuine employees.

Fraudsters will often provide details to give the impression that they are calling on behalf of Standard Life in order to try and make you trust them, and then invest with them. They may try to sell you products, bonds, or investments with the promise of financial gain, offer advice over the telephone or email you links to websites that are bogus).

Similar to cold calling, fraudsters may contact you by email and they may ask you to provide personal information or identification documents. Be alert for emails where the source of the email is unclear or where the company name or email address may be slightly misspelt, or which contain poor grammar, spelling or punctuation.

Below is an example of a fraudulent e-mail sent to a customer. This includes the genuine Standard Life logo but it is not from the genuine Standard Life email domain.

Be on the lookout for fake Standard Life websites and protect your hard earned cash Fraudsters are aware of the lowering interest rates and are using the opportunity of people looking for better investment returns to offer attractive bond products, which do not exist. Criminals are buying advertisements and creating or using comparison sites to promote these products under false pretences.

The industry as a whole is currently working together to tackle this problem and multiple websites have been identified and removed; details of these can be found via the FCA Register.

We encourage you to check the FCA Register to assist you in checking the authenticity of any company you are dealing with.

We have also received reports that the Standard Life brand, and many other well-known financial brands are being cloned. This is where a website is created using the name of a genuine company, and in most cases created to look exactly like the genuine company's website to make the products and offers appear genuine.
